Welcome from the Chair

Welcome, as Chair of Governors I have great pleasure in telling you a little about Marlborough Primary.  Marlborough is situated in the heart of the Devonport community with strong links to the UTC and other Secondary schools in the area.  This enables the school to support your son or daughter to make decisions about their future school and career paths.  The curriculum focuses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) as well as other critical subjects to support our children's development and learning.

What we do:

Marlborough governors provide support and advice to the Senior Leadership Teams as well as monitoring the school's achievements and challenging decisions.

We provide:

* Overview and scrutiny of the management of the academy:

*Policy development for the academy where this has been delegated to us from the Trust; scrutiny of policy compliance by the academy where policy is set by the Trustees;

* Championship of the academy and its leaders;

* Engagement with the parents of pupils and the wider community.

We do this by:

* Holding 6 meetings per year to discuss the school, their achievements and areas of need, the policies and

* Visiting the school and observing lessons and the school in action.

* Talking to the pupils, parents, and staff to find out their views.

* Attending training to extend our skills and knowledge.

    My name is Shelagh May. I became a governor of Marlborough Primary in 2015, when I retired from working here as a parent support adviser. I have spent most of my working life involved with families and working alongside them in their communities. I felt that I could use this experience within my role as school governor. I am a co-opted governor with roles and responsibilities for being vice-chair and early years/ foundation stage governor.

    I strongly believe in striving to offer and provide positive experiences of learning and education for both our children and their families. To this end I am proud to be a governor of Marlborough Primary Academy and be able to support the school community. Visiting the school is a pleasure. I enjoy talking to the children and staff and seeing a variety of activities going on.
    I have two grown up children and four grandsons who keep me in touch with the world of parenting and school life and their challenges.

    My name is Lara Sinclair, I have been part of the Governing Body at Marlborough Primary for over 10 years. I joined the governing body as a community governor whilst I was working in HM Naval Base, Devonport as the School has always had strong links with the Dockyard. My current role is Vocational Qualifications Manager, for Sixth Form at Stoke Damerel Community College. I have only worked in education for nearly 10 years and feel well qualified to support Marlborough in its continuing journey. My governor responsibilities are Safeguarding, SEN KS2 as well as being Chair of Governors. This is extremely rewarding and I never fail to feel excited when visiting the school, seeing the pupil actively engaged in their learning and making progress. I am married with one son, and am also a Cub Scout Leader. If you would like to contact me, please call the school office on 01752 567681

    My name is David Skinner and you may see me around the school fairly often as I am involved in supporting the fantastic parent group for as many events as I can. I have worked locally as an Engineering Manager for the last 14 years, have a military background and have been involved in school governance for many years, as a primary school Parent Governor for my children (the youngest now is 24) and I was asked not long ago to be a Governor at Marlborough Primary Academy, co-opted from industry. My primary role at the moment is helping with Health and Safety aspects of the school and to support the senior leadership team wherever I can. I'm an enthusiastic supporter of the school in how they develop, teach and support families and children throughout their school career. I am married to Denise, the Parent Support Advisor, and have 4 children and a teenage grandson who all still keep me very busy.

  • Rachel Summers

    Term: 01.09.17 onwards
    Responsibility: Headteacher
    Attendance 2019-20 : 3/3
    Registered Interests: None

    I qualified as a primary teacher back in 1995, and have been a class teacher in several schools across Plymouth. In my 25 year teaching career, I have taught all primary age groups, from Reception to Year 6. In 1999, I became a Lead Maths teacher for the local education authority and coached other teachers across Plymouth. In 2001, I was seconded to Plymouth Education Action Zone, and was their Maths teacher, supporting teachers and teaching assistants in the PEAZ schools.

    I joined Marlborough Primary in April 2006, as the Deputy Headteacher, and Year 6 class teacher. In 2014, I became the Headteacher. I feel very privileged to be in this position, wanting the very best for all the children at Marlborough, their families and the community in which we serve.

    I have 3 children of my own, 2 still at primary school and 1 in secondary so have a busy life in and out of school.
